The coffee-growing areas surrounding Chelba are blessed with nutrient-rich red-brown soils. The region is also heavily planted with Acacia ensete ventricosum, locally known as the Ethiopian sweet banana. This abundance imparts a naturally rich, sweet aroma to the freshly harvested coffee cherries. After harvest, the cherries undergo flotation washing at Chelba before being transferred to designated fermentation areas for the next stage of processing.
One noteworthy advantage of the Chelba station is its access to exceptionally clean and pristine water, complemented by a mild annual average temperature of just 18.4°C. Coffee cherries from Yirgacheffe are rested for at least 24 hours before drying. After washing, they are processed again using the region’s purest water, resulting in a cup profile with pronounced sweetness and the unmistakable classic Yirgacheffe character.
Chelba operates over 12 water-processing fermentation tanks and 140 raised African beds. Beyond offering washed and natural processing services for local farmers, the station actively participates in various specialty production programs. Through these initiatives, they continuously provide growers with up-to-date, quality-driven cultivation and processing guidance—enhancing clarity, uniqueness, and flavor identity in the final cup.
